Esther Seidel's Story, as told by Lisa Geiger
Some of you may know Esther Seidel in the orange group. She started running
when she was 57 -- five years ago. She kept her running secret; even her
husband of 38 years did not know. Esther's first major race was the Pike's
Peak Ascent -- 13.1 miles up mountain, in the altitude. She was 58, a month
shy of her 59th birthday.
Esther joined Austin Fit in 2000 to train for her first marathon. She
developed
knee problems and consulted twice weekly with an acupuncturist. He helped
her tremendously and Esther completed her training putting in 45-50 miles
per week. Two days before the marathon, she got the flu; she did not attend
the race.
Last year, Esther came back again, training with Austin Fit again for her
first marathon. At mile 21, Esther's second wind kicked in and she was the
first in the 12:00 minute group to cross the finish line!
Are you impressed yet? This year, Esther, now 62, is again a member of Austin
Fit. Esther is training for the Sunmart 50K -- a 31 mile cross-country race
in December. On Wednesday, Esther completed a 25-MILE training run.
She then went home and wall-papered her bathroom.
Esther always has a great attitude, spirit and spunk. She waited till she
was 57 to start doing the impossible. We have all started somewhere with
our running. As a member of Austin Fit, we have all gone somewhere with
our running. Congratulations to Esther and to all Austin Fit members for
their personal acheivements.
