When I try to put together a marathon story, all that comes to mind is an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I was so emotional about this race! I think with my first one, I was so overwhelmed with it being my first, and wanting so badly just to finish and complete my goal. That's all I could focus on! I was much more laid back this time, and much more aware of everything going on around me. So-
I'm grateful for.....
...living in the incredible city of Austin; complete with the beautiful Capitol, Town Lake glistening in the early morning sun, the funky weather, the UT community, the smells of Tex-Mex mixed with coffee, for a city that provides me the opportunity to simutaneously run next to the governor of Texas and a guy dressed like a banana.
...the band Survivor, for writing such an incredible song as "Eye of the Tiger". And, for the 3 different groups that blasted that song from their stereo along the course.
...the number 471. My idenity for 4 hours and 23 minutes.
...Coach Vince, for running with me a couple of different times along the course. And James Booher for his shouts of encouragement.
...the sweet elderly lady on Great Northern who sat outside her house and rang a little bell for all the runners.
...every single spectator who cheered me on and made me feel like a world class athelete.
...my family and friends, who were completely okay with fighting traffic and standing around for 30 minutes at a time only to see me run by for 2 seconds. Thank you to my mom, my Doug, Ben, Amber, Darcy, Mere, Mere, Grant, Josi, Randy, Johanna, and Maudie.
...the bagpipers!!!
...these restaurants, in this order: Joe's Crab Shack, Sonic, Threadgill's, and Hooters.
...the fact that at mile 25, a runner next to me grabbed some Powerade, swished it around in his mouth, and accidently spat it out all over the back of my legs- and I was completely okay with this.
...the rockin' band in front of Memorial Stadium! Great version of the "Rocky" theme song!
...the pace group leaders- what stamina! What skill!
...all the sweet kiddos who held out their hands for a high five.
...the guy who carried the American flag throughout the entire course.
...most of all, I think I'm just grateful for my physical capabilities. That I have legs that allow me to run and that I'm healthy. That I can see and hear and smell. That I'm capable of fully experiencing this awesome thing we call the marathon.
