Pat,
I just wanted to write to Thank you and all of the other Austin Fit coaches, especially Leslie, Cindy and the rest of the 9:15 crew. Although a year ago I couldn't even make it through a three mile run without walking breaks, I set a goal to run my first 10K sometime after my 50th birthday which would be in November 2004. Somewhere along the way I heard about Austin Fit and my goal changed to completion of a marathon. OK, kind of a big jump in goals, but I was assured that if I stuck to the program, I could do it. On this past Sunday, with the support of Austin Fit and my wonderful wife and family, I met my goal in 4:32:05. I know that meeting this goal would not have been possible without the training, support, information, and tips that I received over the past 25 weeks with Austin Fit. The steady, well-planned increases in mileage helped me to to build a strong base in a short amount of time, and the coaching and information taught me just how important hydration, nutrition, and preparation are to crossing that finish line upright and in good shape. I entered the race with a solid plan of attack: start slow and steady and don't be lured by the downhill course for 1st half, take a gel pack every four miles until mile 20 and then one more at 23, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, and keep on pushing to the end. I stuck with that plan and I felt good at the finish. Sure, I was tired and ready to stop running, but I wasn't beat up, and I didn't have any injuries or blisters...just sore, tired muscles. So, 1st marathon, 50 years old, 4 hours 32 minutes...thanks Austin Fit for being a key part in helping me achieve my goal. Who knows, I might even do it again next year.
